The Story of Books the Word

Books the Word began with a love of reading and journaling. For me, books and journals are both places where secrets live: the stories we carry, the words we treasure, the reflections we record. That’s where the name comes from: a playful nod to ‘Mum’s the word’ – Books the Word. Because sometimes the secret really does lie in the words of books.

Alongside my writing, I began doodling Kai (a non-binary character who reflects my values of fluidity and inclusivity) and their cat, Mumu. They became companions in my journals, and soon, the heart of my designs. My Japanese friend, Midori, later pointed out that Kai & Mumu echoed the charm of Japanese characters. It wasn’t something I set out to do, but the observation resonated with me. With her guidance, I’ve added bilingual touches to my work, weaving English and Japanese together as a small way of celebrating how words cross borders and cultures.

But there’s another thread that runs through everything I do: music. Whether I’m reading, journaling, painting, or designing, there is always music shaping the atmosphere – often smooth piano or soft jazz, sometimes curated playlists that pair with the books I review. For me, music is both background and bridge: it calms, inspires, and connects, turning reading and journaling into full sensory experiences.

Books the Word is more than just reviews or journaling products. It’s a safe space for readers and writers of all identities, a place where inclusivity is at the core. Whether through book reviews with inclusivity checks, journaling tools designed for reflection and self-care, or playlists that soundtrack the reading experience, my goal is to create an ecosystem that feels gentle, creative, and welcoming. Slow living isn’t about doing less, it’s about moving with intention.

That’s the heart of my story.
